The Fear of Failure

Failure is never an easy task. It doesn’t matter if you are just starting out or successful in your profession, failure is a constant battle many people face in their daily lives.

So how do we avoid failure?

Unfortunately we cannot avoid failure without the journey to success. The truth is the bigger the game the greater chance of failure.

Successful people agree that the way a person handles failure will lead to their level of success. While the disappointment can come along with failure, it doesn’t necessarily mean it is a bad thing.

When arrived in a new city, i wasn’t successful in my first interview. While i know, many people don’t get the job on the first interview, I had a huge emphasis on the outcome. I thought the only way for me to stay in a new city was to get this job. It was not the only way. And it definitely was not the best job for me.

Failure can lead us along a path we would have never travelled.

And while it can be hard to seperate ourselves from what we do and who we are, failure doesn’t mean we are failures. Persistence and hard work can go a long way to achieving what you want.

Trial and error has always been the best way to figure out what works. A bad outcome is just a way of letting us know we need to do something different.

Firstly, accept what happened didn’t go so well and feel the emotions. Denying how you feel is emotionally dangerous and can affect your personal wellbeing. When people get in the habit of not accepting how they feel, it can lead to depression and anxiety. Sadness is a necessary emotion before we can move forward with strength.

Secondly, understand why the situation failed. Depending on the situation, we need to look at the situation from every each angle. Sometimes there are signs and we were too busy to notice.

Did you prepare for the situation? Did you study enough? Were you focused and looking after yourself? Does it just need time to succeed?

Thirdly, correct your mistake. When we are correcting our failures, we are building our own sense of self worth and resilience to the situation. We show ourselves we are committed and have faith we can be better.

Does someone need to communicate what you need or what needs to be done? Do you need to apologise? Do i need to be better and do better?

Failure is not the end of the story. It is the full stop of a sentence. It gives you a break and goes “Hang on. I have another idea. I can do this better.”

We are only human. And for those striving to be better, we need to know that what we do is not who we are.

And we can be better with every moment we move forward.
